Tips for Winter Hair Care - January '26

1. Hydration Is Everything

Cold weather strips moisture from your hair faster than you might realize. To fight dryness, focus on hydration at every step.

  • Switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Look for ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid.
  • Wash less frequently. Over-washing can remove natural oils that protect your hair. If possible, stretch wash days and rely on dry shampoo when needed.
  • Deep condition weekly. A nourishing hair mask once a week can make a huge difference in softness and elasticity.
Think of winter as “hydration season” for your hair.

2. Turn Down the Heat (Literally)

Hot showers feel amazing in winter—but they’re not doing your hair any favors.

  • Use lukewarm water when washing your hair to prevent excessive dryness.
  • Finish with a cool rinse to help seal the hair cuticle and add shine.
  • Limit heat styling. Blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can worsen winter damage. Air-dry when you can, and always use a heat protectant when you can’t.
Your hair will thank you for giving it a break.

3. Protect Your Hair From the Elements

Cold wind and friction can cause breakage, frizz, and split ends.

  • Wear hats lined with silk or satin (or add a satin scarf underneath) to reduce friction.
  • Tuck hair into coats or scarves on especially windy days.
  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on already fragile hair.
Protection is prevention when it comes to winter hair care.

4. Lock In Moisture With Oils and Leave-Ins

Moisturizing doesn’t stop after the shower.

  • Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair to seal in moisture.
  • Use lightweight oils like argan, jojoba, or almond oil on the ends to prevent dryness and split ends.
  • Focus on the ends, which are the oldest and most vulnerable part of your hair.
A little goes a long way—don’t overdo it.

5. Trim Regularly (Yes, Even in Winter)

It’s tempting to skip trims during the colder months, especially if you’re growing your hair out. But winter damage can travel up the hair shaft if left untreated.

  • Trim every 6–8 weeks to keep split ends in check.
  • Healthier ends = fuller-looking hair, even in dry weather.

6. Don’t Forget Your Scalp

A dry scalp can lead to flakes, itchiness, and slowed hair growth.

  • Use a gentle exfoliating scalp scrub once or twice a month.
  • Massage your scalp to boost circulation.
  • Apply scalp oils or serums if you experience tightness or dryness.
Healthy hair starts at the scalp—always.

7. Hydrate From the Inside Out

What you do outside the shower matters, but so does what you do beyond it.

  • Drink plenty of water, even when you’re not feeling thirsty.
  • Eat nutrient-rich foods with healthy fats, like avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish.
  • Consider supplements like biotin or omega-3s (with professional guidance).
Winter hair care is a lifestyle, not just a routine.
